Are Used Piston Compressors Worth Buying?

When it comes to investing in equipment for your shop or business, the cost of a new piston air compressor can be significant. So it’s no surprise that many customers ask us:

“Is it worth buying a used piston compressor?”

At Airtek Ltée, we’ve worked with thousands of customers across Canada in building, maintaining, and repairing air compressors. Here’s our take on when a used compressor might be a smart buy—and when it’s not.

When a Used Compressor Can Be A Good Investment

1. It Comes from a Reputable Source

Buying from a trusted dealer you know allows you to verify how the compressor was used and maintained. A well-maintained unit can run for decades.

2. It’s Industrial-Grade Equipment

There are many differences between a commercial & industrial grade air compressor. Often, Industrial grade air compressor will have components (especially pump & motor) built to sustain many hours of work in tough conditions.

3. You Know the Service History

If the previous owner kept up with oil changes, filter replacements, and proper draining of the tank, chances are the compressor still has years of reliable operation left.

4. It Fits Your Budget and Application

For light to moderate use, a used compressor might be a cost-effective way to get higher specs (CFM, HP, tank size) than a new unit at the same price.

❌ When You Should Be Cautious

1. No Service Records or Signs of Neglect

If you can’t verify the history, be wary. Rust in the tank, dirty oil, excessive vibration, or oil leaking from the pump are all red flags.

2. It’s Undersized for Your Needs

Don’t settle for the wrong specs just because it’s cheaper. A compressor running at 100% duty cycle all day will wear out quickly.

3. Parts Are No Longer Available

Some older compressors are built like tanks—but if parts or pump replacements are no longer available, repairs can become costly or impossible.

4. Tank is no longer certified

Tanks are high pressure vessels. The tank is only certified for the first buyer of the air compressor. Anyone after that will to re-certify the tank which can lead to high costs. When authorities visit your plant, they might ask for the certification of the tank.

Final Verdict

It depends! We know for a fact some Airtek Compressors built in the 1980's are still going strong, but these are high quality industrial compressors which have been meticulously maintained and used well within their CFM rating. Unless you have a super tight budget, or plan to use your air compressor very sporadically, we suggest purchasing a brand new Air Compressor.
